Your First Two Weeks in Ottawa

Welcome to your new life in Ottawa, as you settle in this beautiful city, you will need some essential information on various aspects of living here including but not limited to banking, employment, culture, housing, education, health-care and social life.During the first few weeks, we will be with you to provide you with needed help and support until you are fully transitioned and become well informed to plan your next steps. Here are some of the essential things you need to do during your first week in Ottawa.

  • Find temporary accommodations for your first few nights in Ottawa
  • Exchange your money for Canadian currency
  • Apply for the Health Insurance Plan (OHIP, UHIP, IFH)
  • Apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Find out about the OC TRANSPO – Ottawa’s public transit system
  • Open a bank account
  • Look for permanent home
  • Set up essential services including water, heat, electricity (utilities), tenant/house insurance and cellphone
  • Register your children in school or find a childcare for your children,
